Eligible employees
You are automatically eligible to be in the LGPS if all the following apply to you:
- you are under age 75
- you have a contract of employment of at least three months
- you are a local government employee
A local government employee means:
- county and district councils
- academy schools (excluding teachers)
- colleges of further and higher education (excluding teachers)
You may be able to join the LGPS if you are:
- an employee of a town or parish council
- an employee of a non-local government employer providing a public service, or contracted to provide services
Speak to your employer to find out if you are eligible.
Firefighters have their own pension scheme.
Contracts under three months
If your contract of employment is for less than three months, you can still choose to join the scheme.
Casual employees
You may be able to join the scheme during your casual employment. Speak to your employer to find out if you are eligible.
