What happens to your pension when you die

Information for all members about your pension benefits.

Benefits payable for members who have made extra payments

You made additional pension contributions

Additional contributions to buy extra LGPS do not count towards the value of any partner's or children's pensions. These additional contributions only count towards your pension; they are:

  • additional pension contributions (APCs)
  • shared cost additional pension contributions (SCAPCs)

You made additional voluntary contributions (AVCs)

The value of your AVCs arranged through the LGPS is payable. The value of any extra life cover pension for your eligible partner and/or children paid for through AVCs.

You made additional regular contributions (ARCs) - pre 2014

Extra benefits will only be payable to your eligible partner and/or children if:

  • you elected to pay ARCs before 1 April 2014
  • you opted to pay for dependents' benefits when you took out your original contract

If you are still paying the ARCs when you die, the fund will deem you to have completed all payments.

You elected to buy LGPS 'added years' membership before 1 April 2008

Upon your death, the fund will credit you with the full extra period of membership you set out to buy, even if you have not finished paying for it. This credit will increase the value of the benefits payable to your eligible partner and/or children.
