Mark Smith appointed as Oxfordshire Pension Fund’s Senior LGPS Officer

Since the Local Government Pension Scheme (Amendment) Regulations 2026 came into force on 1 April 2026, every LGPS Administering Authority is required to appoint a Senior LGPS Officer. We are pleased to announce that Mark Smith has been appointed as Oxfordshire Pension Fund’s Senior LGPS Officer, following approval at the Pension Fund Committee meeting on 5 June 2026. 

Mark brings extensive pensions experience and strong leadership to the role. His appointment provides clear accountability for the management of the fund and will support Oxfordshire Pension Fund as it continues to strengthen governance, oversee administration and investment activity, and deliver services for members and employers.

What is the purpose of the Senior LGPS Officer role?

The Senior LGPS Officer role is to make sure the fund is well governed and appropriately resourced. The post-holder must ensure that pension matters are given the focus, oversight and accountability needed to protect members’ benefits and support the long-term sustainability of the scheme.

Primary responsibilities

The Senior LGPS Officer’s main responsibilities include:

  • providing strategic leadership for pension administration, governance, and investment functions
  • ensuring the fund is managed in line with legal and regulatory requirements
  • supporting the Pension Fund Committee and Local Pension Board with professional advice and effective reporting
  • making sure the fund has the people, processes, systems and resources needed to run effectively
  • overseeing high standards of service 
  • helping to identify, manage and monitor key risks affecting the fund
  • promoting strong communication and accountability across the fund’s activities.
