How to decide on ill health retirement

The decision ultimately rests with you, as required by the regulations. While you gather information and obtain expert medical opinions to inform the process, the final determination must clearly be yours. To help you:

  • provide the IRMP with full employment details and expectations
  • the member may also submit specialist reports or treatment information

All this evidence contributes to the IRMP's assessment and opinion, which you, the employer, then consider when making your decision.

The decision‑making role is challenging, but you should base your conclusion on the balance of probabilities. Your decision should be reasonable and supported by the available evidence.
